Pharmacological Action
Glycine is an amino acid. In the central nervous system (CNS) glycine acts as an agonist at the glutamate receptor N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA). The concentration of glycine in the brain is fairly stable due to the dietary consumption of glycine. However, the addition of supplements can increase CNS concentrations of glycine. Theanine is thought to work for stress-induced anxiety by reducing the release of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter. It is also used for its relaxing and anti-anxiety effects.
Magnesium helps relax muscles and is believed to block the release of excess excitatory neurotransmitters in the brain. Magnesium is also used orally for treating attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS).
