Caribbean Negroni Beer - Single

A Negroni disguised as a Barley Wine. Big malt. Orange. Proper bitterness. 10% ABV. The can says "Bitter. Bold. Balanced." We'd add one more word: dangerous. Afro Caribbean Beer Negroni is a big, bold 10% ABV Barley Wine inspired by one of the world's great cocktails: the Negroni. Brewed in Cape Town by Afro Caribbean Brewing Company in collaboration with Cocktail Daddy, Rhys MacBeth, it takes the Negroni's trademark combination of orange, bitterness and rich sweetness and reinterprets it through beer.

A substantial malt bill of Pale Ale, CaraRuby, Crystal 60 and Special B provides the deep caramelised backbone you'd expect from a Barley Wine, while Columbus hops deliver a firm 47 IBUs of bitterness. Orange then ties the whole thing back to its cocktail inspiration, bringing bright citrus aromatics and a bittersweet edge to the richer malt profile.

At 10% ABV, this is most definitely not a lawnmower beer. Pour it into a proper glass, let it warm slightly and take your time. Tasting Notes Appearance: Deep amber to copper with ruby highlights and a persistent off-white head. Nose: Orange peel and citrus oils lead into caramel, toasted malt, dark fruit and subtle herbal notes.

There's plenty of richness underneath, but the orange keeps things lifted. Palate: Full-bodied and warming, with layers of caramel, toffee and dark malt giving way to candied orange peel and a firm, assertive bitterness. The combination of Special B and darker crystal malts adds notes of dried fruit and burnt sugar, while Columbus hops provide the bitter counterpoint essential to the Negroni inspiration.

Finish: Long, bittersweet and warming. Orange peel, caramelised malt and lingering hop bitterness remain well after the sip.
