Obsidian Brut is a premium South African Cap Classique born in the Witzenberg Valley of Tulbagh, created with a very clear ambition: to put African luxury sparkling wine on the same table as the world's best bubbles. Inspired by obsidian volcanic glass; raw, dark and naturally formed under immense pressure, the brand carries that idea through everything from the polished black presentation to the wine itself.

More importantly, there's proper substance behind the rather sexy bottle. Obsidian is made using the traditional Cap Classique method, with extended lees ageing used to develop greater texture and complexity. The Brut is the drier, fresher expression in the range, combining bright citrus and crisp orchard fruit with almond, brioche and a fine, persistent mousse.

Tasting Notes Colour: Bright pale gold with a fine, persistent stream of bubbles. Nose: Fresh citrus and crisp green apple are layered with toasted almond, brioche and subtle yeasty complexity from time spent on the lees. Palate: Fresh and energetic with lemon zest, apple and citrus at the core. Fine bubbles give the wine an elegant, creamy texture, while vibrant natural acidity keeps everything precise and refreshing.

But thankfully, Obsidian hasn't relied on packaging to do all the heavy lifting. There's a serious Cap Classique underneath it, citrus freshness, almond and brioche complexity, fine bubbles and enough acidity to keep everything beautifully composed. It's also refreshing to see a South African producer going unapologetically after the luxury sparkling wine category, rather than positioning Cap Classique merely as the cheaper thing you buy when Champagne feels expensive.

It's not trying to be Champagne. It's trying to make you stop asking for Champagne.
