Macallan Gold Double Cask

The Macallan Double Cask Gold is a discontinued, non age statement Speyside single malt that sits at an interesting point in Macallan's modern history. The whisky began life as The Macallan Gold, introduced in 2012 as part of the colour led1824 Series. When Macallan discontinued that range in 2018, Gold survived: the same whisky was renamed Double Cask Gold, moved into the newly created Double Cask family and received new bottle and packaging.

Macallan itself confirms that Double Cask Gold is the former 1824 Series Gold under its new identity. It combines whisky matured in American and European oak casks seasoned with Oloroso sherry, bringing together the sweeter vanilla-led influence of American oak with the dried fruit and spice associated with Macallan's European oak maturation.

Tasting Notes Colour: Burnished gold, entirely natural, with no added colouring. Nose: Creamy butterscotch and toffee apple lead into candied orange, vanilla custard and fresh oak. It's unmistakably Macallan, but lighter and brighter than the heavily sherried expressions. Palate: Honeyed and smooth, with citrus, raisins and caramel, followed by cinnamon, ginger and gentle wood spice.

There's plenty of sweetness from the American oak without becoming sticky. Finish: Warm and gently drying, with lingering oak, sweet spice and citrus.
