100% Herbal Vitality Support Unleash the Wolf in You Ubangalala Abstract In KwaZulu-Natal, most muthis (medicinal plants) associated with male sexual health are commonly known under the name uBangalala. Research indicates that the main plant sources used in these traditional preparations include three plants from the genus Eriosema (E. kraussianum, E. salignum and E. cordatum) and three plants from the genus Salacia (S. rehmannii, S. leptoclada and S. kraussii).
Because the roots contain the desired active components and are typically purchased without leaves or stems, identifying the corresponding plants presented a challenge. This was addressed through field research in the areas where the plants naturally occur. An interesting finding was that S. rehmannii, although not traditionally associated with KwaZulu-Natal, is widespread in the Maputaland Sandveld and is an important source of the sought-after traditional muthi, uBangalala.
The Eriosema plants contain two closely related pyranoisoflavones, while the Salacia species contain triterpene quinone methides. According to existing literature, compounds such as pristimerin have been investigated for various potential uses, although evidence relating specifically to male sexual health remains limited.
Further research is therefore needed to better understand which plant compounds may contribute to the traditional uses and perceived effects associated with uBangalala.
