Description
D-mannose is a sugar that is found naturally in the body and preliminary research suggests that it might interfere with the adhesion of bacteria to the urinary tract, thereby protecting against some UTIs. In vitro tests indicate that d-mannose can inhibit binding of around 50% of E. coli strains to epithelial cells. Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a common problem, and d-mannose may be a useful treatment. However, it is possible that d-mannose might worsen glucose control in patients with diabetes, and use during pregnancy and lactation is not recommended. Side effects and precautions associated with d-mannose use are rare and generally mild.
