The properties and ecological relationships of glacial-fed streams are poorly understood. It is now recognized that the couplings among the different biological components are highly dependent upon the complex glacial flood plain and its dynamic network of channels. This monograph summarizes a comprehensive study of a glacial flood plain in the Swiss Alps that can serve as a generic model of how these dynamic ecosystems function.
With marked global warming and rapid alterations of glaciers, these rivers are experiencing rapid alterations in hydrology. This study provides an important baseline foundation for examination of the extent and rapidity of impending changes. The book comprehensively evaluates the characteristics and floodplain evolution of Val Roseg on an annual basis for several years.
Channel typology, groundwater-surface water hydrology, thermal and chemical regimes are examined. Biotic dynamics of vegetation, aquatic flora, fungi, and surface and interstitial fauna are evaluated in detail. Analyses are presented of the spatial and seasonal dynamics of the functional processes of organic matter, litter decomposition, nutrient limitations, and drift and colonization.
Emerging from these analyses is an important synthesis of these dynamic and rapidly changing river ecosystems.
