The here's Journey begins in rural China in 1951 during the turbulent times of the Korean War. He comes by way of Hong Kong to join his father, uncle and aunt in New York, while leaving his mother alone in China. Once in America Ken struggles against overwhelming odds in life, longing for his mother alone at home in China; despite personal misfortune amid larger impersonal events, unrequited young love, he was sustained by the hope that he would one day be reunited with his mother and continues his life journey into manhood.

The novel ends with his falling in love with his Jewish college friend's sister, and thus begins a new journey.
