The article discusses how MAB (Multi-base Arithmetic Blocks) are an excellent way to introduce and reinforce trading/exchanging of place value in numbers to children. The blocks come in different sizes and can be used on a whiteboard to demonstrate the structure of our number system.
When children initally undertake the learning of numbers it's generally done bu some kind of continuum, where the numbers just go on and on and on. Rote learning of numbers does not necessarily introduce the children to the importat structure of our number system, grouping of tens, hundreds, thousands and so on.
