The genus includes about 100 accepted species of trees and lianas, and more than 200 that are as yet unresolved. The genus is widely distributed around the world's tropics. The genus is noted for the presence of poisonous indole alkaloids in the roots, stems and leaves of the plant. Among the alkaloids are strychnine and curare.Strychnos henningsii commonly known as Bosolienhout, Hardepeer, Hardepeerhout, Koffiehardepeer, Koffiehardepeerhout or Rooibitterbessie in Afrikaans and Coffee Hard Pear, Coffee-bean Strychnos, Hard Pear, Natal Teak, Panda's Walking-stick Tree or Red Bitterberry in English is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Mpumalanga Provinces. It is synonymously known as Strychnos albersii, Strychnos barbata, Strychnos elliottii, Strychnos holstii var. procera, Strychnos holstii var. reticulata forma condensata, Strychnos holstii var. reticulata forma laxiuscula, Strychnos ligustroides, Strychnos myrcioides, Strychnos pauciflora, Strychnos procera, Strychnos reticulata and Strychnos sennensis. Strychnos henningsii grows into a small to medium sized tree with glossy green leaves with clearly visible veins. During summer it bears small greenish-cream to orange flowers.
