The story of the love relationship between the daughter of a freed slave and a British aristocrat, during the mid-nineteenth century at the Cape. Martha Solomons is a simple woman, the daughter of a freed slave. Harry Grey is a priest from the British aristocracy, sent to the Cape Colony of the mid-nineteenth century because of bad behaviour. In the rugged Namaqualand their paths cross and a bond of love develops that stays with them throughout the contrasting landscapes of their lives.
