Description
This excerpt from the book "Strategic Stability in Asia" by Amit Gupta discusses the strategic challenges and possible outcomes for stability in Asia. The book looks at the various pressures and challenges that countries in Asia are facing, as well as what actions they are taking to try and establish stability. The book discusses how China's rise could impact stability in Asia, and how various countries are trying to establish a framework for stability.

Amit Gupta seeks to address two interrelated questions in this volume: what do the major states of Asia view as the emerging challenges in their immediate security environment as well as in the broader Asian region; and what future security outcomes would make them believe that strategic stability had been achieved in the Asian continent.Central to the latter question is China and the path it will take to rise to superpower status. While all the major Asian states increasingly are both economically and politically engaged with China, doubts remain about China's long-term intentions. This volume discusses what military, diplomatic, and economic measures are being taken by the major Asian countries and Australia to establish a new framework for strategic stability. In doing so the authors look at what global pressures are impacting on these countries' security dilemmas and furthermore, from the perspective of these countries, what patterns of expected behavior would China have to fulfill for a regional security order to emerge in Asia.
