Description
The wine is a Pinotage from 2020 and was made from grapes from both older dryland bush vines and from trellised vineyards in Paarl. The soils are mainly decomposed granite. The wine was hand-picked very early in the morning in Paarl on mostly clay-loam soil between mid-to-end February. Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, with regular pump-overs. After malolactic fermentation was completed, the wine spent 15 months in 15% new French and American oak barrels, before blending and bottling. The bouquet is led by roasted banana, cherry and cassis, followed by subtle notes of chocolate and cedar wood. The palate has a complex, velvety coating with hints of plum and fruity sweetness on the finish. Food Pairings: Rich, hearty meat dishes like lamb or venison stew. Wine of origin: Paarl. Vegan friendly.

In 1647, the Nieuwe Haarlem part of the Dutch East India Company fleet floundered in bad weather and ran aground near Table Bay. This was the shipwreck that led to the creation of a new state in the southern part of Africa. The brave crew, lead by captain Leendert Janszen, stayed behind with him to look after the shipwrecked cargo and during this time, planted vegetables and the Cape's first vines. The crew's survival and exploration of the vicinity led to the establishment of a halfway station by Jan van Riebeeck on April 6th 1652, which ultimately led to the founding of South Africa and the first vines being planted in the Cape. Today, the Cape is still rich with vines, some of which were first planted by Janszen and his crew from the Nieuwe Haarlem.
