Description
This text is written to educate readers about advances in the area of new materials used to make products. Materials and their properties usually limit the component designer. Therefore, advances in materials are critical because they enable new designs and product features that result in new or additional benefit to the component designer and the user. The importance of advanced materials has been publicized by the invention and commercialization of polymer composites. Many people who were previously unaware of advanced materials saw carbon based composites start in the space program and advance to be materials used in their tennis racquets, golf clubs and automobiles. Coming after plastic composites are other, even more exciting, materials that will be used in sporting goods, aircraft, automobiles, and other commercial products. These new materials are being introduced to selected designers by material developers/suppliers. Broad introduction is precluded by the cost and manpower required to do so. This book is a cost-effective way of alerting designers and others to these new materials.
