Description
The article discusses the difference between activated charcoal and resin filters, and which one is better for different water qualities. Activated charcoal is better for filtering free-radical ions, while resin filters are better for exchanging ions. If the water is hard, using a charcoal filter will improve the water quality, while if the water is odorous, using a resin filter will improve the water quality. If the water can be considered standard, normal, then there is no real benefit to using either filter.

Filters for Breville, CARBON vs. RESIN (Ion Exchange)

    - - - Two different filters for 2 different purposes - - -

Activated charcoal (carbon) is to filter free-radical ions such as Chlorine, Fluorine, etc. Certain reactive chemicals also bind to activated charcoal. Said charcoal is the same ingredient used in hospitals and emergency rooms to bind drug overdoses. It's meant to bind reactive chemicals.

These Resin filters, on the other hand, are meant for ions (i.e. cations, such as calcium, iron, magnesium, etc) and exchange it with a non-scaling ion most typically potassium. Ion-exchange resins, in summary, is better termed "softener." Water softeners use ion-exchange resins. What makes water "hard" is those dissolved solids and most typically calcium (the white chalky stuff).

You can only appreciate the difference depending on the original water quality.
If your water is hard, you'll find more benefits using this Blue Signature ion-exchange filter to soften it up.
If your water is odorus, such as chlorine taste, or sulfur taste from well water, you will find better benefits using Charcoal.

If your water can be considered standard, normal, which means it's soft (i.e. dissolved solid is low at 50 ppm or 100ppm), and generally clean (not heavily treated, low chlorine), then you won't find much additional benefits using either or both.
