Styptic pencils contain astringents to achieve this.There you have it! In short, when you cut yourself when shaving, a styptic pencil will stop the bleeding immediately. I have visions of my dad's morning shaves and he always ended up with a face full of tissue paper or cotton wool to stop the bleeding.
