Magnetic tumbling has revolutionized the art of jewelry polishing, cutting hours of expensive hand labor from the process. Magnetic tumblers can polish to a bright finish the undersides of rings, undercuts, channels, fine filigree and other hard to reach places in as little as 30 minutes for gold and 45 minutes for platinum.How does it work? Imagine thousands of smooth tiny hammers pounding the surface of your jewelry. These hammers are burnishing the surface, just like if you took a polished steel burnisher and rubbed in against the surface. These tiny hammers can reach into the smallest crevices and channels, easily reaching places that you take a long time to finish by hand. The result is that the surface becomes bright, shiny and work-hardened.For these hard to reach places, the polishing is complete. All this is done much more quickly than what you could do in conventional rotary or vibratory tumblers and there is no metal loss as magnetic tumbling is not an abrasive process. The smooth broad surfaces of your jewelry are now ready for a final quick polish by hand or in polishing media. This magnetic tumbler can be used to process some rings with stones intact, such as ; cubic zirconia (cz), rubies, sapphires diamonds.It is important to remember not to leave the tumbler on the base when the machine is not in use, or the shot will eventually become demagnetized.1. First, use a fine jewelers file to remove scratches, excess solder, and other blemishes from the metal. Try to remove as many blemishes as possible with the file. This is especially important because the machine is not designed to remove scratches.2. Make sure pieces are clean. For example, cast pieces should be free of all investment. (Ammonia and an old soft tooth brush work well for cleaning investment off charms.)3. The steel shot should be kept in the plastic tumbler along with water in order that the shot does not rust. When it is time to polish, replace old water with clean water and fill up to the maximum line as marked on the outside of the tumbler.4. Next, add some drops of burnishing soap into the water. The amount of soap needed depends on the size of the machine. For the smaller machine, approximately 8 drops are recommended. I have also used regular dish washing soap with a good deal of success, 5. Place metal pieces into the tumbler and replace the lid. If pieces are small, about 8 10 can be polished at the same time.6. Swith on the machine and let it get up to speed, a few seconds is long enough, then put the tub on top and watch the magic start.Magnetic Polisher FAQCan I use my polisher straight away? Initially, the stainless steel pins will have straight-cut ends, so it's a good idea to run the polisher with some scrap metal for an hour to begin to round them off slightly.How many items can I fit in it? To give you a rough idea the acrylic drum will hold about six or seven average sized finger rings. How long do I need to polish items for? 30 minutes usually does the job; however you will need to experiment with the amount of water, the number of pieces and the running time until you get the desired finish.To begin with, check your work after about 20 minutes to see how its looking until you get a feel for how long things will need.
