VW’s legendary Kombi has been a best-seller in South Africa for the past six decades. Now, the much-loved vehicle from VW’s Transporter range (T-series) is back with a new look and some fancy new features to please the modern driver. Say hello to the VW T6.1 Kombi. What’s new?
The new T6.1 Kombi model offers fans of the legendary transporter a few new features to enjoy. The exterior boasts a striking new radiator grille. The grille is now significantly larger and forms a single stylistic unit with the new bumper. All elements below the bonnet, like the headlights, are new. Six newly designed wheels, six new exterior colours and seven newly combined two-tone paintwork finishes round off the new exterior updates to the range.

Inside, the T6.1 features a new instrument panel with an additional shelf in front of the driver. Also new is a larger tray for a smartphone with, an inductive interface for charging which is an optional feature. The steering wheel has also been redesigned – on the new multifunction steering wheel there is now a ‘View’ button, which enables the driver to switch between the digital cockpit’s different display configurations with just one click. The T6.1 also boasts a new 10.25-inch digital cockpit with an infotainment system and digitalised instruments. VW’s T6.1 Caravelle and California models are equipped with the Discover Pro Media system with navigation as standard and on the Kombi Trendline Plus, it is available as an optional feature.
Other new additions to the Kombi T6.1 include vehicle dynamics control systems, adapted chassis adjustment, and electro-mechanical power steering, which is being used for the first time in the T6.1. The new steering system makes the T6.1 noticeably more agile and precise. The steering system can be controlled as needed and this also reduces fuel consumption. The combination of electro-mechanical power steering, vehicle dynamics control systems and adapted chassis adjustment, offers enhanced handling and driving fun for a high level of ride comfort, especially on longer journeys.

As for the safety and driver assistance systems, the T6.1 offers features like Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Automatic Post-Collision Braking (also standard), Tyre Pressure Loss Indicator, standard cruise control system inclusive of speed limiter and parking assistant Park Assist. Optional safety systems include Trailer Assist and the advanced main-beam control system Light Assist. The full spectrum of driver assistance systems makes the T6.1 one of the safest and easiest driving commercial vehicles on the market.
The T6.1 Kombi is being offered in two model lines: the Trendline and the top-of-the-range Trendline Plus. The Kombi’s interior trim is in Titanium Black in all model lines, as are the seat covers in the standard version. The door handles are in chrome. In addition, the Kombi is embellished inside in all models by chrome-look trim and black instrument visors. Even on the base Trendline version, the Kombi’s bumpers are painted in the vehicle body colour. In the Kombi, the Circuit fabric is used as standard. The backs of the seats are also equipped with two new pockets to create space for gadgets such as smartphones.
Pricing and availability
The T6.1 Kombi is now available in South Africa, The Kombi range offers 3 models 2.0 TDI 81kW Trendline, 2.0 TDI 110kW DSG Trendline, and 2.0 BiTDI 146kW 4MOTION DSG Trendline starting from R697 700.
The Kombi range comes standard with a 5-year/ 60 000km maintenance plan and a 3-year/ 120 000km manufacturer warranty. The entire T6.1 range comes standard with a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty. The service interval is 15 000km.
