George French Angas 1822-1886 . Zulu Blacksmiths At Work. Original 1849 Lithograph Hand Coloured.

 Here is a bright hand coloured lithograph by George Angas, framed and in excellent condition. The subject matter is of great interest.This  plate originally appeared in one of the most sought after titles in Africana, " The Kafirs Illustrated" published in 1849 in London by J. Hogarth in 1849. Not a later print.Print is 25 cm x 34.5 cm. In an excellent condition mount and frame. Frame is 39 x 57 cm.This is one of the plates that Angas drew himself on stone and also lithographed himself. The hand colour is exquisite: take for instance the small fire at the base of the picture.Courier postnet to postnet is only R99.George Angas studied drawing and lithography in England. He is well-known as an artist, writer, traveller and zoologist with many books to his credit , particularly  in Australia and New Zealand for his books South Australia Illustrated and New Zealand Illustrated,both of which appeared in 1846-1847,  the prints of which regularly sell for over R10 000. He was at the Cape and in Natal in 1847 and commenced his journey north from Durban to Zululand in September 1848.After that he was director of the Government Museum in Sydney and he also taught art there.On retirement he settled in South Australia.
