The genus is present in the fossil record at least since the Miocene of Europe. Celtis species are generally medium-sized trees.Celtis gomphophylla commonly known as False White Stinkwood is a South African indigenous species from the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal Provinces. It is a deciduous tree up to 30 meter tall. It has grey green bark and dark green leaves with entire margins.
