In the annals of aviation history, the rugged Ford Tri-Motor played a significant role that greatly affected the future of commercial aviation in the United States. The Tin Goose was introduced in 1926, and it contained a number of design innovations that were quite revolutionary. It was the first commercial airliner built in the United States featuring a fuselage designed with an enclosed cockpit and heaters to improve the comfort level in the passenger cabin. In the Tri-Motor, visionary Henry Ford saw a unique opportunity to improve transportation in the air in much the same manner that the famed Model T revolutionized land travel throughout the world. The Tri-Motor was instrumental in the pioneering days of commercial flight. Compared to todays jumbo jets, the Tri-Motor with its eleven wicker seats, corrugated metal surfaces and triple radial engines, compiled an impressive flight record that was significant. More than seventy years after the first flight of the Tri-Motor, several examples continue to fly throughout the Untied States and South America.
