 Irritable bowel syndrome, also known as IBS, spastic colitis, mucus colitis and nervous colon syndrome is a long-term (chronic) gastrointestinal disorder that causes abdominal pain, bloating, mucous in stools, irregular bowel habits, and alternating diarrhea and constipation.
