Description
Neobuxbaumia is a genus of around 9 species of cacti. The genus is placed in the Cactaceae family. Some species in this genus are still very hard to find in cultivation. It naturally occurs in the southern and eastern parts of Mexico where it forms impressive cactus forests. They are all large tree-like species which reach nearly 15 meter in height. The stems are columnar with abundant ribs and eventually they form branches with age. As with most tree-like cacti, the young plants vary significantly in appearance due to the proportions of spines/rib size to overall stem size. Juvenile plants are normally more heavily spined while adult plants will drop spines on the lower parts of the stem or at least the spines are dwarfed by the stem size.           Ribs may be somewhat tuberculate and spines are not particularly heavy and do not obscure the stems. The eye-catching flowers are bell-shaped and may be white, red or pink. They open at night and are often bat-pollinated. The fruits are round with spines and split open when ripe with a white pulp. The genera Pseudomitrocereus and Rooksbya have been brought into synonymy with this genus.Neobuxbaumia polylopha is found only in Mexico and is confined to a small area in the state of Guanajuato. Neobuxbaumia polylopha forms a single large arborescent stem and does not form branches with age. It can grow to heights of over 15 meters and can grow to weigh many tons. The pith of the cactus can be as wide as 20 centimeters. The columnar stem of the cactus has between 10 and 30 ribs, with 4 to 8 spines arranged in a radial manner. The spines are between 1 and 2 centimeters in length and are bristle like.
Neobuxbaumia polylopha is popular among cactus enthusiasts and reproduces well in nurseries. The common names of Neobuxbaumia polylopha are the cone cactus, golden saguaro, golden spined saguaro, and wax cactus. Polylopha means many ribs. Neobuxbaumia polylopha also has many synonyms due to being reclassified. The synonyms include Cereus polylophus, Pilocereus polylophus, Cephalocereus polylophus and Carnegiea polylopha. It was classified as being part of the Stenocerinae subtribe of the Pachycereeae in 1975 by Buxbaum. The fruits are edible to humans and have a delicate, nutty flavor. Seeds grow quickly, and can germinate in three weeks.
