The Aerolatte Caffee Porcellana is a new take on the classic stovetop coffee maker (or moka pot) design that has been around since it was created by Alfonso Bialetti in the 1930s. It brews using the same basic principles, pushing hot water up through a bed of coffee grounds using the pressure created by steam. Like the moka pots that inspired it, it also can work on pretty much any stovetop.
The Caffe Porcellana has one major difference though - rather than being one piece, it has a serving jug made of porcelain that you can remove after brewing. Beyond the obvious aesthetic flare, this has a couple of other benefits - you run less risk of over-heating the brewed coffee and making it taste bitter. It also means that you don't have to pour right away (something that's quite important to do with an aluminium moka pot).
When we tested it out, we were really impressed with the quality of the extraction of the Caffe Porcellana. The coffee it produces is a bit different to the Bialetti moka pots, with a strength more similar to an Americano than espresso. Its design means that you can't stop the extraction short to create a more concentrated drink, but if you like a longer black coffee, it produces
very tasty results.
We think this is a great coffee maker when you want to brew a strong, long black coffee for one person, or even stretch it between two when you don't mind diluting for a slightly weaker cup. In either scenario, we think it's great value at the price point, as well as a beautiful addition to your kitchen.
