The working method is based on the critical angle principle, where by the lens and prisms project a shadow line onto the glass reticule within the device. This can then be viewed and ensured by the user through the eyepiece which magnifies the image and can be rotated to obtain the correct focus. The refractometer also has an automatic temperature compensator (ATC) that adjust the lens and prism calibration in response to adjusting temperatures. The refractometer is also easy to use, with an adjustable manual focus and a soft rubber eyepiece for comfortable viewing.
