Description
Berita is an award winning African singer, songwriter, and guitarist originally born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
She lived with her dairy farming parents and studied in New Zealand in her high school years. Berita currently resides in South Africa where she began her music career whilst pursuing her tertiary studies. Born as Gugulethu Khumalo the name Berita is actually her mother s ID name, but she uses it as her stage name in honour of her strong, hardworking dairy farming mother. Her compositions are inspired by the reality of life, challenges young girls face growing up, awareness of African heroes and endurance. Fuelled by love, pain, heartbreak and hope her motion is unstoppable.
Her music depicts modern day African Pride. Her guitar filled rhythms and mostly self-penned compositions are a hypnotic heart and soul remedy. In Ndebele, Xhosa, English and Shona she sings. From heart break soul, slow love jams, uplifting inspiring anthems her music is best described as African Pop. Early 2012, she released her debut album called CONQUERING SPIRIT, fuelled by heartbreak soul the main single Thandolwethu shot to the top of the charts in radio stations around the South Africa and has garnered Berita a following leading to numerous live performances in halls, stadiums, festivals and other prestigious events. Still a newcomer in a genre, her biggest dream is to become a stern voice that stands for growth, development and success of African women all around the continent.
2014 is a big year for Berita. Firstly, she graduates with a Diploma in Financial Information Systems from Walter Sisulu University. Secondly, she will be touring Southern Africa for the first time starting in Malawi in February where she plans to record a tune for her second album. In March she went on a successful tour to Malawi and Mozambique. Later in April she visits Senegal for collaboration with Senegalese musician Carlo D and French artist Fanny G. Thirdly, she has licensed the music from her first album to an international documentary called Positively Beautiful about HIV and AIDS in South Africa, this documentary is due to be screened in Film Festivals around the world in 2014.
And as she begins work for her second album she humbly holds collaboration that brings together for the first time two of Africa s renowned world musicians Oliver Mtukudzi and Hugh Masekela in a song.
