Gives a more nuanced picture of medieval life and thought by interrogating the notion that the Middle Ages was an era of unquestioning faith, or alternatively an age of dissent. The picture is more complicated, however, since it is not clear that doubt is itself an emotion. This work investigates how doubt was experienced; were it occurred, and what were thought to be its remedies in different situations. This examination of doubt ranges over various discourses, rather than being confined to doubt on matters of faith. Evidence of doubt in its multifarious forms is needed to round out the current two-dimensional picture of the credulous Middle Ages. However, apart from supplying a necessary corrective to the accepted view of the radical alterity of medieval mentalities, focusing on the role of doubt in the Middle Ages may cast further light on the question of what has been seen as the 'modernity' of the era. This view saw the twelfth century as the intellectual and psychological precursor of the modern world. This study argues that changing attitudes to doubt can be traced throughout the century.
