Herbal Extraction Solvent Usage
Creating your own herbal extract is easy and only requires a few steps. This guide is specifically aimed at creating cannabis oil (also called THC/CBD oil, RSO oil or FECO) and was adapted from GrowWeedEasy.
Decide if you want to decarb your plant material first. Decarb is short for decarboxylation. Decarboxylating describes the process of slowly cooking your weed to activate all the good stuff in it by turning THC-A to THC.
If possible, place the herbal extraction solvent and plant material in the freezer overnight (do not mix yet). This makes the alcohol absorb less unwanted material like chlorophyll.
Place your plant material in a jar.
Pour in enough herbal extraction solvent to completely cover the plant material and add another 0.5 cm for good measure.
Let the mixture sit until 20 minutes have passed. Shaking the mixture periodically will aid the extraction process.
Pour the mixture through a coffee filter or cheese cloth.
Create a double boiler and heat the water until it boils, then turn the heat to medium-low.
Pour your tincture, made in steps 1 - 6, into the top bowl of your double boiler. The tincture should heat up and small bubbles will form.
The tincture will slowly evaporate into an oily, sludge-like substance. Do not allow the tincture to boil too fast.
Turn off the heat and collect your cannabis oil. Collecting your oil will be much easier while its still warm and with silicone tools.
Skip steps 7 - 10 by using a still. A still not only makes it easier, but you can also reuse your solvent multiple times.
