Konsentrasiekamp. 'If there is one document that tells us of one of the most traumatic moments in Afrikaner history, it is this diary. . I was particularly moved by Dominee Luckhoff's entries in his diary about his work and experience with suffering and death in the Bethulie camp. After three days he scribbled: "Evening: Coughing; wailing; crying; groaning. The misery in our Camp heart-rending; hopeless to cope with work." Or on 24 October, the last date of entry: "The continual cry is 'Mijnheer, kom tog hier', 'Mijnheer, gaat tog daar' and one grows so weary of scenes of suffering and sorrow; always red and tear-stained eyes; always Love, helpless, hopeless, impotent, despairing; always face to face with Decay, Change, Death; always the same close, stifling, little tent." Then Luckhoff fell ill with enteric and on 1 November he was taken to hospital. Eventually he left for home where he recovered completely. This diary will not leave the reader untouched. Instead it is the experience of a man fulfilling his life task - ensuring the welfare of his less-privileged fellow men - with unselfish dedication.' - from the introduction by Professor Fransjohan Pretorius.
