Mathematics come alive for children when it is set within real-life situations. Moreover, the maths lesson can become a time of fascinating discovery for pupils who are allowed to "invent" and compare their own methods of solving problems. Active Mathematics is written and designed to make mathematics relevant and interesting for pupils by contextualising the problems and explanations within the child's everyday world. Regular practice in all aspects of the syllabus is given: exercise in the four basic operations is constantly alternated throughout with opportunities for practical measurement of length, capacity, mass and time as well as practical work relating to money. By the end of the course, the pupils should have a clear understanding of the practical value of mathematics for daily use.
