Design and Ergonomics
The HDR XR500 is compact at a size of 71 x 75 x 137mm and weight of 500g. An assignable dial on the front of the camcorder can be programmed to control a variety of settings, including focus, exposure, AE (Auto Exposure) Shift, and WB (White Balance) Shift. The 3.2& wide (16:9) touch panel Xtra Fine LCD display renders sharp, bright, photo-quality images, and when opened quickly powers up the camcorder automatically. The touch panel gives quick access to features such as spot focus and spot metering. For added convenience the Start/Stop & Zoom buttons are located on the LCD frame. An additional adjustable .27& colour viewfinder(123k pixels) allows the user to record and review video and still images with the LCD display closed. The Active Interface Shoe lets you mount Intelligent Accessories, such as external lights and microphones, which can help extend the capabilities of the camcorder, and an auto lens cover protects the lens when the camcorder is powered off.
Lens and Audio-visual quality
A 1/2.88& Exmor R& CMOS image sensor delivers bright, vivid, spectacularly detailed video footage, as well as 12.1 megapixel still images. With a 6 megapixel (effective) video resolution, the image sensor records video at 4 times the density of High Definition resolution resulting in a better quality 1920 x 1080 HD picture. The Exmor R sensor relocates the photo diodes above the support circuitry, maximizing the light-gathering area per pixel so you can shoot with greater clarity in lower lighting conditions, giving an approximately 2x increase in sensitivity compared to Sony's existing front-illuminated CMOS sensors at F2.0. The sensor is further complimented by the Professional-quality Sony G Lens which uses Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass to reduce chromatic aberration for more accurate colour reproduction with less &fringing&, and precision ground optics which offer stunning resolving power. 15x Optical zoom, along with a further 180x digital zoom brings you closer to the action. Audio recording can also be &zoomed in&, with the built-in zoom microphone which focuses audio recording on your subjects in sync with the camera's zoom lens, ensuring that the Dolby Digital 5.1-channel surround sound stereo recording matches the video imagery.
Recording System Features
A built-in 120GB hard disk drive can record and store up to nearly 48 hours of High Definition video footage (HD LP mode), or up to nearly 84 hours of Standard Definition footage(SD LP mode). Additionally, &HDD Smart Protection& helps prevent any recorded video and images from damaged lost if the camcorder is accidentally dropped, for peace of mind. Hybrid recording technology gives the user the choice of recording onto either the built-in 80GB hard disk drive, or a removable PRO Duo Memory Stick. Various dubbing functions can also be used to easily copy video from the Memory Stick PRO
