Diane is from Cambridge and is going to work at Derby House as a teleprint operator. Myra is from Liverpool and is very bitter and angry. Ruthie is from Liverpool and is working at the munitions factory to put food on the table for herself and her mother. Jess is from Liverpool and is very lively and vivacious. The four of them are all billeted to each other and become friends. In the novel, Diane falls in love with Myra, Ruthie falls in love with Jess, Myra falls in love with a American GI, and Jess falls in love with a British soldier.
