What is IP or Ion Plating? How long does it last?
In brief, Ion Plating is a physical vapor deposition (PVD) process by which thin films of a condensate or vaporized form of a material are deposited on to another surface or substrate. Within the jewelry trade, the most commonly used material is Titanium Nitride. When combined with other elements, it produces a hard, durable finish in a variety of colors: black, brown, silver, yellow gold and rose gold (without using or introducing any precious metals). While the durability of the coating depends upon a number of factors, properly done the finish or color of IP jewelry items can last for decades.
